A few years ago Facebook told me it was National Siblings Day. I have a brother, who I love and appreciate, who I also like to make fun of as much as possible. While I was searching for a funny gift or meme to send to him I came across a t-shirt that said in big bold letters:
WORLD’S OKAYEST BROTHER
It was perfect. My brother is actually the world’s best, but I can’t tell him that! He needs to stay humble and I am here to facilitate that. I shared a photo of this shirt on his FB timeline so everyone we knew could see how much I treasure him. I don’t remember how he reacted to it but I am pretty sure he laughed and accepted it as a token of my love.
The fact that my brother is actually one of the world’s best people to ever exist, leaves this word “okayest” as a better fit for me, which is why I have claimed it.
My name is Jennifer. I am one of many. One of 1.4 million according to ssa.gov. Jennifer was the number one most popular name in the United States for 14 years straight. Which one of us Jens is the World’s Best? Who decides? Maybe our parents or our spouses can say for certain we are the world’s best, but you’d have to ask them.
Being an Okayest Jen has been a journey and I am hoping to use this blog to share with you what it is like to be Jennifer. What does that even mean? I don’t know exactly yet. I have learned a lot in my 43 years but I still have so much to figure out. Here are some things I will be writing about:
- What life is like as a woman in her 40s
- Raising three biracial teenagers
- Married life
- Married life in an interracial partnership
- Growing up Mexican-American
- Living in a multigenerational household
- Friendships from teenage-hood to adulthood
- Being one of 1.4 million Jennifers
- Food reviews
- Book reviews
- Navigating higher education as a middle aged person
- Travel
- Art
- Writing
- Career journey
Hopefully I can write about these things in a way that is captivating, useful, entertaining and interesting to you. Please leave me a comment below telling me where you are from (I am in Southern California)!
Welcome to the Okayest Jen Blog!
Yours Sincerely, Jen
