Poetry PoTuesday – Response to Clark Little Photography

, ,

This whole website is going to be a mish mosh of a bunch of stuff for a while. Today is Poetry Potuesday. Yes, I meant to write Potuesday.

In my creative writing class last semester my professor introduced me to different forms of poetry, one was responding to a photograph or any sort of visual art.

Clark Little’s photography has always moved me. I don’t remember the first time his -crystal-clear-water-swirling-with-sunset-colors-seeping-through- photos were presented to me. It might have been at an art gallery at Sea Port Village in downtown San Diego, or it could have just been my IG algorithm working it’s magic.

The ocean has always been an important part of my life thanks to my mother, who dressed me in bright pink swimsuits over my diaper and plopped me down onto the sand in Santa Cruz, California. It is because of her that I call the ocean my playground, my school, my home, my church.

Please take a moment to savor this photograph by Clark Little titled Pink Flash. Then scroll down to read my poem in response. Also, take some time to check out his website. He has so many captivating works of photographic art to see. I am dying to own a large print to hang on my wall at home!

Is it normal to gaze into crystal clear water and
crave dissolution?

To want to
melt into the translucent ocean,

our bodies
disintegrate into the saltwater,

bones sink down to
gently lay on the sandy floor,

deep sea worms
devour fats from our skeletons.

Is it normal to feel a pull to
evaporate into the pink sky?

Become feathery clouds that
actually weigh one billion four million pounds,

our souls
floating amongst the auroras,

solar winds
blasting us to wherever souls go,

to decide when we
come back to our bodies on Earth.

Sincerely Yours,
Jen
