A Girl Approaching the Ocean – Poem of the Week

,

This assignment had to do with rhythm and sound in poetry. I have to say that I really like writing about nature and how humans interact with it. Especially water, especially the ocean.

A Girl Approaching the Ocean

Can she be brave enough to go in,
or will she doubt herself?
Wave patterns lull her.

How can she let go of fear,
in order to step into fluctuation?
Blue swells hypnotize her.

Should she question
the weight of the surge?
Cool spray quickens her.

Will her swimsuit stay on
as she fights through the whitewater?
Unhesitating waves break on her.

How long
can she hold her breath?
Invigorating water envelops her.

Does she let her feet lose touch with the sand,
or keep herself grounded?
Slick seaweed welcomes her.

What will she hear
as her body rolls under the sea?
Bubbles sizzle around her.

How long
can she hold her breath?
Sunlight refracts around her.

Can she open her eyes,
while she is below the surface?
The world beneath enchants her.

Does she know
which way is up?
Obliging currents lift her.

How long
can she hold her breath?
Oxygen returns to her.

What will she see
while she bobs and floats on the surface?
The deep blue cradles her.

Can the clouds see her smile
that beams into the atmosphere?
Doubt leaves her.

The Girl that inspired this poem, my daughter.
