Family Summer Reads 2024: Teen Faves, Classic Literature, and More

Do you have a special summer reading list? I decided on some very specific genres to read before my fall school semester begins and I asked my kids to pick at LEAST one book to read during their summer break. I would like to share what we are all reading right now! I’ll start with what my youngest has chosen:

My 13 year old son is currently reading Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard. He enjoyed the Percy Jackson series and is really liking this book!

The 15 year old is learning about the fashion evolution of Harry Styles and she cracked into her dad’s comic book bins and found her favorite, The Amazing Spiderman and Ninja Turtles.

The 17 year old is a fan of Osamu Dazai, she has read a couple of his other books. Bungo Stray Dogs (manga series) is also her favorite and she is going to delve into Gothic literature with Bram Stoker’s Dracula and Edgar Allan Poe.

Criteria for my picks:

I have been trying to finish The Witcher for over a year now I think. There is nothing wrong with it, I like it, it’s interesting. I have watched the series so maybe knowing what is going to happen makes it easier for me to put it down and forget about it. I don’t like abandoning books so I keep going back to it!

I finished The Perfect Marriage so quickly. It was a fun read, entertaining, and it kept me on my toes! I enjoyed discussing it with my husband asking him who he thought was the murderer. I was definitely surprised in the end.

I am in the middle of One Hundred Years of Solitude right now. All I can think of when I read this is the Disney movie Encanto. I am about halfway through and so far it has been confusing to keep all of the family members in order since they all have the same names. I am fully immersed in this dramatic saga that is full of magical realism, war conflict, forbidden romance and a lot more.

I haven’t started the other two books (Financial Feminist, Bird by Bird) and we are already one month into summer break! I also don’t think my kids have picked up any of their books since school ended. Wish us luck on finishing before school starts back up!

Sincerely Yours,
Jen

Me, trying to pick up books more than I pick up my phone to doom scroll.
