Here is my short story assignment for the week. Where do you think they are going and why?
Jan and Otto
Jan had no idea where they were headed, but her weathered vintage leather suitcase was packed as if they were never coming back. Her brothers bag plopped down next to hers, the holographic sequins adding to the deep scratches of her well traveled case.
“Dude, don’t you have anything less flashy, and maybe bigger? We will be gone a while.” She deadpanned.
“Sorry I’m not Indiana Jones. This is all I had that was big enough, you know I hardly travel anywhere.” Complained Otto rolling his eyes.
The siblings gawked at each other in silence until Jan sighed, breaking the tension. She walked into the kitchen, grabbed a canvas tote to begin filling it with food for the road. Fruit snacks, applesauce pouches, Cheese-Its, Alani’s, and mini bottles of Whipped Smirnoff for Otto. Beef sticks, elk jerky, protein bars, two jars of instant coffee, and that last tin of caviar for her. She asked Otto to carry some of the five gallon jugs of water from the garage to put in the back of her Jeep.
“But it’s so heavy! I don’t think I can do it.” Whined Otto as he moved his hands around one jug trying to find the best placement to pick it up.
Jan threw the bag of snacks into the Jeep and stomped over to the water jugs. She bent at the knees, grabbed two jugs by the handle in each hand, stood up, and placed them into her car with ease. Otto watched her, hands on his hips, as she put six jugs in her car in a matter of seconds.
Otto squeaked “Why are you such a brute? You scare me sometimes. You are definitely the man of the family now.”
“What do you mean NOW? I was always the man of the family you idiot.” Jan said with a smirk. Otto smiled back and asked her if there was anything else he could do that didn’t require muscle.
The siblings gathered more food for the cooler that plugged into the jeep, quietly asking each other if they wanted the mayo for sandwiches, which jam to pack, and if eggs would be a smart choice for the journey. Jan told Otto that he needed to bring sturdy shoes and to make sure he had enough warm clothes because she didn’t know where they would end up sleeping.
“Can’t I just wear your clothes? I don’t have ugly warm stuff.” Pleaded Otto as he shuffled through his closet.
In between the teasing, he and Jan had to come back to the task at hand. She stood next to him to help choose more appropriate gear. She didn’t know how they were going to survive the next few weeks together away from home. He noticed her furrowed brow, grabbed her by the shoulders to face him and demanded, “What is happening Jan? Why are we even doing this? I know you aren’t telling me the whole story.”
“Otto,” Jan pleaded, “once we leave, we can’t come back. We have to completely disappear. I didn’t want to tell you because I didn’t want to scare you but now I am freaking out and I need you to get it together and help us survive this! I can’t carry the both of us by myself.”
“Sister, you aren’t gonna carry me, we are riding in your Jeep.” Otto snickered. Jan smiled through her welled up eyes and grabbed him for a tight hug.
Thanks for reading my writing.
